VA Will Not Require Invasive Ultrasounds

YES!!

Unfortunately, I can’t say I’m completely happy about this. There are still some serious problems.

A) This bill was still allowed to reach the governor’s desk. It should have been laughed down long ago.

B) Read the governor’s statement about why he didn’t sign the bill and allowed for some “choice” in the matter. He is hardly enthusiastic. Yes, this means that he appreciates and listens to arguments from the public, but it doesn’t mean he’s happy about them and that could mean future bills that intrude on women’s rights that do get passed.

C) This bill still requires women seeking abortions to pay for their own ultrasound for very ambiguous “medical reasons.” Having a choice in the type of ultrasound you get is a small step in the right direction, but it’s still a shaky one. I’m obviously not qualified to say that it is or isn’t actually medically relevant to be forced to get an ultrasound when seeking an abortion, but with the personhood bill that’s being considered, will this even matter in the end?
